Everyone is aware of how ridiculous the situation is, but Phoenix still goes through with it because it's the only option left. Basically, every bit of dialogue in that scene is hilarious. He's also prone to falling asleep standing up, complete with Snot Bubble. He's absolutely convinced that they're his kids Meg and Keith and he runs a pasta shop called the Wet Noodle.
